"Palm Sunday," Jacob Lawrence, 21st c.

Opening Anthem Soldier, Poet, King The Oh-Hellos

There will come a soldier who carries a mighty sword He will tear your city down, oh lei-oh lai-oh Lord; Oh lei, oh lai, oh lei, oh Lord He will tear your city down, oh lei-oh lai-oh Lord

There will come a poet whose weapon is His word He will slay you with His tongue, oh lei-oh lai-oh Lord; Oh lei, oh lai, oh lei, oh Lord He will slay you with His tongue, oh lei-oh lai-oh Lord

There will come a ruler whose brow is laid in thorn Smeared with oil like David’s boy, oh lei-oh lai-oh Lord; Oh lei, oh lai, oh lei, oh Lord Smeared with oil like David's boy, oh lei-oh lai-oh Lord; Oh lei, oh lai, oh lei, oh Lord He will tear your city down, oh lei-oh lai... oh

Call to Worship Psalm 118 Adapted

One: O, give thanks to the Lord, for he is good!

All: His steadfast love endures forever!

One: Let Israel say, “His steadfast love endures forever.”

All: Open to us the gates of righteousness,

that we may enter through them and give thanks to the Lord.

One: This is the gate of the Lord; the righteous shall enter through it.

All: I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation.

One: The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.

All: This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.

One: This is the day that the Lord has made!

All: Let us rejoice and be glad in it!

One: Save us, we beseech you, O Lord!

All: O Lord, we beseech you, give us success!

One: Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

All: We bless you from the house of the Lord.

One: The Lord is God, and he has given us light.

All: Bind the festal procession with branches, up to the horns of the altar.

One: The Lord is my God, and I will give thanks to Him.

All: The Lord is our God; we will extol Him.

One: O, give thanks to the Lord, for he is good!

All: His steadfast love endures forever!

One: In such faith, we greet one another, “The peace of Christ be with you.”

All: And also with you.

Prayer of Invocation & Confession In unison

Jesus, King of the universe,

ride on in humble majesty:

Lord, this Palm Sunday may we recognize in you the Lord who comes to his world, and join with full heart in the people's 'hosanna'.

Ride on, through conflict and debate,

ride on through sweaty prayer and betrayal of friends:

Lord, this Palm Sunday forgive us our evasions of truth, our carelessness of your honor; our weakness which leaves us sleeping even while in others you suffer and are anguished; our cowardice that does not risk the consequences of publicly acknowledging you as Lord.

Ride on to the empty tomb and your rising in triumph,

Ride on to raise up your Church, a new body for your service.

Ride on, King Jesus, to renew the whole earth in your image,

in compassion come to help us. Amen.
