Vespers at Twilight
Church on the Hill is one of several Protestant churches in Lenox, all of which worship on Sunday mornings. To offer an option to those for whom Sunday mornings are often spent otherwise, we decided to gather for worship at 4 PM instead.
This was a challenge for those of our members who are used to church on Sunday morning, but together we rose to the challenge, and we've received lots of positive response.
One member explains she loves to watch the light fade across the sanctuary wall over the pulpit as day turns to evening.
Another member has appreciated the new opportunity to get to the gym on Sunday mornings when it's still open.
A third finds herself at sports tournaments that her kids participate in on Sunday mornings, but finds that Sunday afternoons are always open for turning toward the week ahead.
Still another says that, as a mother of two school-aged children, Sundays are the only mornings she's ever able to sleep in, so she loves not missing church in doing so.
The pastor loves choosing hymns for singing in worship that are about evening and the end of day. After a lifetime of admiring many of them but with no regular way to use them, she just can't help herself now.
Come give evening worship a try. You might find its delights as appealing, or even more so, than what you'd find on Sunday morning.
